Pirate Joe’s Makes Waves on Startup Podcast

When podcast meets pirate: costumes & hidden microphones.

StartUp is a podcast series about what it’s really like to get a business off the ground. For their current season, StartUp shares stories about companies that, in their words, has them following prisoners, tailors, smugglers, and tech geeks.

Enter Pirate Joe’s. The Vancouver-based business stars in a recent episode of the American podcast produced by Gimlet Media, presenting an inside look into this “small, grassroots, international smuggling operation,” infamously known in Vancouver as “the place that resells all the stuff from Trader Joe’s.” Mike Hallat, Pirate Joe’s proprietor, has had his share of notoriety in the public eye from various legal battles, but has to date successfully pulled through dicey waters to continue about his business.

So what’s it take to be a pirate? Listen in as StartUp follows Mike on a typical undercover cross-border booty run. And if you find yourself jonesing for a jar of TJ’s Speculoos Cookie Butter or Parmesan Pita Chips but not planning a trip across the border anytime soon, check for announcements on Pirate Joe’s opening date at their new Point Grey location.
