What to expect at this year’s Garlic Festival

Garlic Festival 2014

Garlic. It’s every chef’s staple ingredient. The Sharing Farm Society is hosting their 6th annual Garlic Festival at Terra Nova Park and we’re excited to join in the festivities. On Saturday, August 24th from 10am-3pm, garlic lovers of all ages will gather together for live entertainment, cooking demos, workshops, and kids activities. Expect over 1,000 lbs of fresh organically-grown artisan garlic for sale right on site. We had a chance to ask the organizers a few questions about this year’s event:

What’s different about this year’s Garlic Festival?

We’re really excited about a grant we received from the Richmond Community Foundation for a new project. We’ve invited Sam Bradd, a talented graphic facilitator, to create some audience participation edu-tainment. He’s going to lead two discussions on “What does a healthy and well-fed community look like?” and “What’s does garlic mean in your home?” Sam will take audience’s input and draw them out in real time. The finished illustration will be 8ft long by 5ft tall. We hope this will help people understand the impact of what we do on the farm every day.

What’s on special for lunch?

The award-winning Steveston Pizza will be coming up with a masterpiece! They will use our garlic and transform it into something amazing.  Be sure to line up early at the Cob Oven because it will sell out quickly. We’re so grateful, as Nader from Steveston Pizza will be donating all these featured pizzas to the farm, which is a big part of our fundraising for the day. Also, Earnest Ice Cream will be there with garlic or salted caramel ice cream!

What’s a fun fact about garlic?

A lot of people don’t know that different kinds of garlic have distinctly different flavours. Here’s an idea: roast a bulb of our Italian and a bulb of our Korean garlic. Start by eating the Korean. When you’re about half-way through the bulb, switch to the Italian. It will taste sweet!
