Best independent bookstores in Vancouver

Much like other cities, Vancouver’s independent bookstores are slipping away. All the more reason to hold on to these magical little spaces that remain. Whether you’re on the hunt for a special title, splurging on a pile of new reads, or looking to pass time on a wet afternoon, pop by one (or more) of our favourite local bookshops.

Macleod’s Books

Deemed as “the last great bookstore” by Globe and Mail, this legendary treasure trove is filled to the brim. And we’re not exaggerating. Wander through the skinny aisles – there are stacks upon stacks upon stacks, piled to the ceiling. Part of the amazement is the knowledgeable staff who can help you find anything amongst the madness…without checking a computer. 455 West Pender Street

Pulpfiction Books

With more than 80,000 titles spread across three locations, Pulpfiction is a beloved micro-chain in town. They carry a lot of recent titles, as well as niche genres, for a fraction of the price. If you are editing your own collection and want to sell your books, you can do so for cash or credit (we’ve bought and sold a ton of books here)! 2422 Main Street

Spartacus Books

Spartacus can write a book on resilience. The nonprofit, volunteer-run bookstore and resource centre has been run collectively for 50 years surviving many moves and iterations, including a devastating fire in 2004. 1983 Commercial Drive

Tanglewood Books

This local gem is tucked away in Kits and is known for carrying great titles (including work from local writers). It is cozy and well-organized, and the staff go out of their way to help you find what you’re looking for. You can also sell your books here for cash or credit (of course, trading always gives you the best value). 2306 West Broadway

Paper Hound Bookstore

This little whimsical book nook is just the right side of small, as we seem to always easily find a book we didn’t know we needed! Friendly, relaxed shopkeepers bring in wonderful new, used, and rare/hard-to-find items. 344 West Pender Street

Kidsbooks

A wonderful bookstore that covers the whole spectrum when it comes to children’s literature – they have the classics, educational resources, seasonal titles, fiction, non-fiction, and everything under the sun. A must-visit for children, parents, teachers, and those young at heart. 3083 West Broadway

  1. It’s a real shame you left out Vancouver two remaining radically independent bookstores: Spartacus Books and Peoples co-op Bookstore. Spartacus Books has been volunteer run for over 40 years, survived a fire through strong community support and which as recently relocated to 3378 Findlay Street.
